Belmont Hill School is seeking a costume designer and supervisor for our 2025-2026 winter theatrical season, consisting of an evening of ten-minute plays. The performance schedule is as follows:

 

  1. First meeting on or about 11/18
  2. 1-2 production meetings, dates/times TBD
  3. Dress rehearsal 2/5 @ 4:30 PM
  4. Performances 2/6 and 2/7 (Friday @ 7:00 PM, Saturday @ 3:30 PM)
  5. One-day strike in the week following performances

 

The Costume Designer/Supervisor will be responsible for the design and implementation of

the costuming of this evening of short plays, in consultation with their director, Paul DiResta. The Designer will, when necessary or appropriate, train and assist students in the proper running of the show.

 

Rehearsals run for 45 to 90 minutes in the afternoons on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, usually with two longer Saturday technical rehearsals. The Designer need not attend all rehearsals, but will be expected to attend technical rehearsals and all performances; other rehearsal attendance will be determined in consultation with the director. The Designer will have access to a dedicated fitting and work space, as well as an ample budget for the purchase, construction, or rental of appropriate costumes and needed materials. As an independent contractor, the Designer is expected to use their own tools and equipment.

 

Qualified candidates should have:

Experience with costume design, construction, and supervision

Experience working with a team on creative or theatrical performances.

Interpersonal and communication skills to successfully interact with staff, faculty, students and other constituents of the School.

A desire to work around and with the students of the School.

 

The successful applicant should expect to:

 

· Attend production meetings to collaborate with directors and contribute ideas for the artistic vision of the play;

· Design, create, and procure costumes for the play (costume budget for each play to be discussed and agreed with the Director of Theatre);

· Perform measurements;

· Perform fittings and make adjustments as needed;

· Launder and/or press, return, and store costumes properly in a timely manner;

· Take notes from the directors and make adjustments as needed at tech rehearsals;

· Be onsite to assist actors and make sure all costumes are safely returned during tech week, dress rehearsal, opening night, and closing night; and

· Be onsite for strike to assist the actors with costume room clean up and to collect soiled costumes.

 

The dates of employment for this position rendered as an independent contractor, starting with our 1st production meeting and ending on strike day for the production, are listed above. There are no set expectations for the number of hours that this will or should entail on a weekly basis.
